Prestige rallies Rustenburg to read
The Bidvest Prestige Rustenburg team was part of the 2015 Rally to Read initiative. The first beneficiary was Mathopestad Primary School in the Boons area, about 60km from Rustenburg.
Reading books, educational toys, and balls were donated. It may have looked like a small gift for a rural school that needs so much, but it was clear both teachers and learners were equally grateful. Even though there are serious challenges facing the teachers in terms of school infrastructure, they remain positive, motivated and encourage learners to do their best to reach their future dreams.
One of the Grade 4 learners, Unathi read from one book and his reading skills and confidence were very impressive – a testament to the school and its dedicated teachers.
The second beneficiary was Bakubung Primary school, about 6km from Mathopestad. The challenge at Bakubung Primary is that four grades share one classroom. The infrastructure at Bakubung Primary is well maintained though there are clearly more classrooms and teachers required.
Their learners are also older for the grades they are in, due to the fact that there was no school during the first couple of years when the community was moved back to their land. They received educational toys, reading books, pens, rulers and even a soccer kits.
During dinner, as all teams shared their experiences of the day it was clear that there are many more schools needing support from both the Private and Government sectors. The Rally to Read organisers, have been sponsoring and hosting this programme across various rural schools for many years with this being the first time that Bidvest Prestige Rustenburg region has been actively involved.
