From Humble Beginnings to Leading with Purpose – Lucky Mzamane’s Journey of Growth, Balance, and Empowerment

In the dynamic world of operations, few journeys capture the essence of resilience, adaptability, and empowerment quite like that of Lucky Mzamane, General Manager of Operations at Bidvest Prestige. Rising from a Supervisor role to the helm of operational leadership, Lucky’s path is a testament to courage, intentional growth, and the transformative power of uplifting others.

One of the defining moments in Lucky’s career was stepping into the role of Branch Manager in East London, a city across the country from Cape Town, where she had lived and built her entire support structure. She moved there with her young son, entering an unfamiliar city and a completely new environment. This bold leap taught her the value of embracing change and staying focused on the bigger picture. The lessons from her early career, confidence in her abilities, navigating challenges with composure, and maintaining a relentless commitment to personal growth remain the foundation of her leadership approach today.

Mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping Lucky’s professional journey. She credits her mentors for their guidance and wisdom, which she embraced fully, translating knowledge into action. Today, she pays that forward by mentoring interns and entry-level employees, believing deeply in the principle that “sharing is caring.” For Lucky, seeing others grow not only fuels her passion but also reinforces her own confidence and purpose.

Balancing motherhood and career growth has been one of her most defining personal achievements. Lucky approaches this balance with realism, acknowledging that perfection is neither possible nor necessary. By prioritising tasks based on circumstances, setting clear boundaries, and leaning on family support when needed, she creates space for both professional excellence and meaningful quality time with her son. Motherhood, she says, has sharpened her ability to adapt, plan strategically, and manage the unexpected skills that have strengthened her leadership.

Empowerment, to Lucky, means more than just opportunity; it is about actively supporting and grooming people to reach their potential. At Bidvest Prestige, she finds that empowerment is embedded in the culture through structured development programmes and a commitment to nurturing talent at every level.

Her message to women who aspire to leadership but feel limited by their current circumstances is both inspiring and unwavering: “Embrace your strength, for within you lies boundless potential. Every challenge reveals your resilience, while setbacks pave the way for growth. Let your voice and work resonate, inspiring change and lifting those around you.”

Looking ahead, Lucky’s aspirations remain firmly rooted in continuous learning, career development, and creating opportunities for others. She carries forward the belief that “the sky is the only limit”, a mindset that not only defines her own journey but also lights the way for those who follow.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate leaders like Lucky, women who rise with courage, lead with empathy, and empower others to dream bigger and reach higher.
